Nvidia to power Windows Mobile Devices
After years of dominance in the computer graphics segment, Nvidia is now targeting the currently super-hot mobile multimedia device fragment. They announced their APX 2500 chipset in February, and they are currently focused on getting in the ring to make the iPhone and its competitors sweat. And they are using Windows Mobile at the core.
But this will not be a typical Windows Mobile interface that we generally see in business phones; it will have a custom finger-swipe interface, which is seen to be highly graphical (much like the XPERIA's custom interface).
Nvidia has an edge, thanks to its expertise in the field for all these years. The APX 2500 is a single chip that has all elements embedded in it. Other than the typical animated finger-based navigation, this chip is powerful enough to perform heavier tasks like playing a 720p video. While pumping such a muscle, the chip manages its power resources quite efficiently and claiming that the devices could play hi-def videos for up to 10 hours.
We're likely to see APX-based devices in the coming few years.
